There are a lot of ways to turn your music into money. But often artists are missing out on these abundant revenue streams because they lack knowledge about how the music business works. I’ll be honest – I’ve been making music for over 20 years and every time I start to scratch the surface of this topic, I get overwhelmed. Rightly so. The system was probably conceived in some back room speak-easy by high-paid lawyers and music executives, who wanted to exploit the creative output of naive or under-educated artists.
Fortunately in this information age, we have access to educational resources to help us sort through the legal-jargon and better monetize our music.
Check out this great post*** by Budi Voogt which breaks down the copyright and publishing side of music.
***His writing is great but the drawings (see above) are a bit hard to decipher.
